PostgreSQL is a free database where data sits in tables of rows and columns, and you ask questions of it in SQL — a language almost every database understands. Changes come in bundles that either all go through or none of them do, so data can never end up half-updated. It can also look inside stored documents, search text properly, and gain new abilities through add-ons. I'd only look elsewhere when the data has no shape to it at all.
