A document database storing records as BSON documents in collections, with a flexible schema and a query language that works on nested fields and arrays. Documents stay together in one read, which avoids joins for aggregated data, and the aggregation pipeline transforms documents server-side. Replication sets provide high availability and sharding spreads data horizontally — trade-offs being weaker relational guarantees and stricter indexing requirements than PostgreSQL.
